Since the regular NWMHC Schooling Show is not being held this year, the NWMHC has an developed an exciting event for all NWMHC members to still have a chance to learn and practice for this year’s show season. Former club member and prominent judge, Portia Kalinka, has donated two days of her time to hold a workshop / show for members on March 12 & 13. This event is open to members only and will be held at the Casino Gold Ranch in Dallas, Oregon. Facility, announcer, ring steward and experienced help are all being donated to make this an affordable event that all can attend and enjoy. A potluck lunch will be enjoyed as we have a question and answer period with Portia and learn “trade secrets” directly from the judge. Instead of ribbons and awards participants will receive individualized verbal critique of their performance with tips on how to improve their placings in the upcoming point shows. Not a member? Membership forms will be available at the event for all who want to join the club and receive the benefits of attending this valuable event. Details, times and how to sign up can be found on the attached flyer. Mark your calendars – this is a once in a lifetime opportunity you will not want to miss!
The Northwest Miniature Horse Club Presents A Day with Portia Kalinka For NWMHC Members
Why: Since we are not having our schooling show this year a well known judge and former member of the NWMHC, Portia Kalinka, has graciously donated two days of her time to do a schooling workshop/ show for members of the club.
What: This will be a schooling and showing event to learn how you can improve in your driving and halter performance. Classes will be held in all four sections of approved driving classes: Classic Pleasure, Country Pleasure, Single Pleasure and Roadster. Halter classes will concentrate on the performance of the handler. Instead of ribbons and awards participants will receive an individualized verbal critique from Portia on how to improve their future performance and halter skills in order to receive higher placings in the local and point counting shows. Mark and Sharon Bullington have donated their time to announce and run the ring and Amber Owens has donated her time to assist Portia.
Where: Darrell and Cherie Smith of Casino Gold Miniatures have donated the use of their facility for this event. The address of the facility is: 3800 Kings Valley HWY, Dallas ,OR 97338.
Who: Open to members of the Northwest Miniature Horse Club. Membership forms will be available at the event for those wishing to join the club.
When: Friday, March 12th and Saturday, March 13th. Participants will pick one day or the other. Friday classes are predicted to be smaller and those able to attend on a week-day are encouraged to choose this day. The event will begin at 9:00am each day and will end at 5pm.
Food: There will not be food available for purchase. Each participant is asked to bring a potluck dish for lunch in the heated meeting room. Portia will hold an informative question & answer session during the lunch break. This is your opportunity to find out what judges are really looking for and to ask questions about fitting, presentation, show-ring attire, grooming and general show-ring etiquette.
RSVP: There will not be any entry or registration forms for the event. To keep costs down and allow us to offer this extraordinary opportunity for club members, paperwork and registration will be kept to a minimum. We do ask that you RSVP via e-mail or phone call as far ahead as possible, indicating which day you will attend, so we can plan Portia’s time accordingly.
Cost: The cost for one day is $10 per member per first horse and $5 per additional horse with a limit of 5 horse per participant.
Accommodations: This is a one day event. No stalls will be available. Come prepared to manage your horse from your trailer. If you are traveling a long distance and need overnight accommodations for your horse please make other boarding arrangements. Contact Darrell or Cherie Smith for a list of near-by overnight possibilities. Access to the barns housing the personal and training horses of the facility will be off limits to both horses and people. There is both an indoor and outdoor arena, either of which may be used according to weather. Please remember that we are guests of a private breeding and training facility and that it should be treated with great respect. Do not bring horses that are not up to date on their vaccinations or who may be sick. We must show respect to our hosts by not leaving equine illness in our wake and by cleaning up your space around your trailer.
Preparation: Body clipping in not required, or encouraged, for this event. A neat clip of the bridle path and long face hair will help to present your horse in the best manner while leaving the coat for warmth and protection. If your horse is body clipped be sure and bring appropriate blankets and hoods to keep them warm and protected from the weather. Show clothes are optional, so dress warmly and comfortably.
Horse Eligibility: This event is limited to miniature horses only. Horses do not need to be registered and there will be no measuring. This is not a sanctioned show for either registry, therefore copies of registration papers are not required.
